Hi Guys,

I'm in search of a decent CAM program to use for my lathe ops. I have a Sherline 4400 lathe that I will be converting to CNC. Probably use a servo system like what is on my Sherline mill from IMS in Michigan. Although, I'm open to other suggestions if there is something better out there.

Eventually I will be buying a larger lathe to handle larger projects but for now the 4400 can handle what I need to do.

I currently use Rhino for CAD and RhinoCam Pro (Visual Mill) for my smaller mill. I like the way both work together. I'm looking at Turn which is also made by MecSoft who publishes RhinoCam and Visual Mill. It costs around $900-1000 depending upon who you purchase it from.

I hope to use Mach Turn to control my lathe along with a servo system. I'd like to find out what other CAM turning programs are out there and what their caveats are. I should also state that any product from BobCad will not be considered as they have lied to me before.

Thanks,

macona

Meh, all software companies lie... ;)

I really wouldnt waste any money converting a Sherline to CNC, use the money towards a real machine.

I am trying mastercam for lathe. I actually havnt done anything on my lathe yet.

I've not used either of these so can't comment on their utility but there is LazyTurn which is part of the Mach stable. Also, Dolphin Partmaster Turn might be worth a look as it's relatively cheap.

A few other candidates here: http://www.freebyte.com/cad/cadcam.htm

Hi
Unless you are making very complicated parts, most things for the lathe can be done using the wizards in mach3 turn.
I use it a lot
That said, be careful with threading..I have had problems and spoke to another that did as well.
