The old reciprocating air compressors running 600-900 SCFM at 250 psi. used disk type valves. Regular Valve maintance was an ongoing task. The valve body had to be honed flat and needed a little texture to the surface like the honed cylinder when reseating rings on an engine rebuild. The compressor shops all had homemade valve lapping machines to accomplish this. I had them hone my valves and they did a workable but mediocre job in most cases. The worst problem was the time and inconvenience. If a valve was in decent shape I could hone it by hand but that also took time. A local guy started a small machine shop and came up with a factory made vibratory hone. The first and only one I have ever seen. He ran my valves until he closed the shop. I was able to buy the hone when he sold things. I still have the hone but compressors have moved into the screws and the original need has dissipated. What other uses for this type service are out there?
