Here is a video clip of the model hit $ miss engine I made. It takes a few minutes to load. http://www.thekilmerplace.com/engine.AVI.

That's a nice engine, Arlo. Is it modeled after one you had on your boyhood farm in Minnesota?

Yes, that is a nice engine.

Have a question after looking at many of these hit-n-miss.

What was the purpose of this design, just slow RPM?

If I understand correctly, the main purpose was to save fuel in a day and age when fuel was harder to get and/or people had little money for basic needs.

Unfortunately, I cannot get the video to run.

The hit & miss engines were used largely in agricultural and other applications where constant speed was needed. They did not have throttles, and the hit & miss function was a simple means to govern the speed.

We did use them on the farm out on the prairies of Minnesota, John Deer 1 1/2 HP. Instead of the butter fly in the carb controlling rpm, the rpm is controlled by an induced miss governed by the centrifugal force of the weights.
