  • Thoughts on power compound?

I have an old enco 10" lathe, anyway I had to make a 1*taper about 8"long, and man is my hand sore, all that cranking is a pain.

So I want your thoughts on running a dc motor on the crosfeed.

PS, I know about offsetting the tailstock, and taper atachments, my rockwell has one but it is not here yet.

      Evan,

I love it. Don't know how I missed it when it was posted. And the clutch idea is perfect. I was thinking of a stepper but wondered how much drag it would put on the lead screw for manual operation.

Question: The lead screw is an Acme which has a flat top thread. What about a simple collet type device to couple the motor to it?

And if you look REAL close at an analog signal,
You will find that it has discrete steps.

        Paul,

It could work but there isn't a lot of room between the lead screw and the rear apron of the cross slide.

For short term use, a low speed variable speed drill motor can be used as a power feed. A low tech flexible coupling can be made from a stout piece of rubber tubing to accomodate misalignment.

great Evan, I have several Bbq motors, I get them at garage sales for a buck or so, never know when they might be usefull.I may start on it today.

Though I am no photographer, here it is simple and quick.

well first you put the round thing with the square shaft into the Bbq drive then you slip it into the compound knob and bolt it down to the compound slide(the brass knob) this will hold it in place, then you plug it in and turn it on . assuming you are ready to turn your taper, stock in chuck, taper adjusted etc.at 5 rpm it is a little slow but better than by hand, thanx for asking Evan, and thanx for the idea and pic.

It works well.though no engineering wonder.

Neat idea. Does it run in both directions?

What make and vintage lathe is this on? It looks suspicously like the one I have.

I like down and dirty ideas, one can always make a better looking one if they want. This is just revision 1.

                        the nameplate says..

                        model 110-2021

so it is like a 10 -24" just a cheapie.but serves me for now, till i can get my delta rockwell home.

and G.A., no reverse on the crossfeed, not a priority, now.
