Hello first time here. I hope I have come to the right place. I was over at practicl machinist and didn't get any real useful response to my questions. I have read several post on this and other sites regarding after market lathes and it seems to strike a nerve when they are mentioned. I've been looking at used lathes with tooling made in this country and all I've come up with is ether a millon miles away or worn out junk in need of a lot of work befor it could be use. So, I’m hoping to get a little feed back. So here goes I’m looking at the Grizzly 0709G gunsmith lathe it has a large thread range and spindle and lots of tooling. The Clark 1440 looks as though it has a better fit and finish other than it seems as though it is just the run of the mill 14x40 lathe. And the other is the Precision Mathews 1440B It comes with a lot of tooling, taper attachment, collet closer, 5 piece quick change tool post. But mostly a 2” spindle bore. However it seems to be lacking in its threading capabilities and looks kind of rough in the photos. I’ve owned a couple of old lathes in the past SB9” and a Logan 11” so I have a little knowledge but was wondering if any one had some thoughts on any of these lathes or if there is a way of knowing which company has better quality control?????????
Hope I don’t rub the anyone the wrong way with this discussion.
