I've got a Jacobs Rubber Flex Collet chuck that came with the Clausing I picked up. I cleaned the cruD off of the chuck and discovered that there is still a Rubber flex chuck in it. I put the whole affair on the lathe, put it in back gear and tried (emphasis on tried) to loosen the hand wheel. That puppy must have been put on by someone that was really having a bad day. Bottom line, I can get it to loosen up. I am assuming that the hand wheel should turn counter clockwise (towards the operator). I've tried tightening, have soaked it down good with penetrating oil, but still can't get the blasted things to move. Any and all suggestions are appreciated. BTW, the lathe is not yet under power, so I'm stuck dealing with this based on brute strength.

I've dealt with 5C collet chucks and have never run into this. This is my first go around with a rubber flex type.

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

John,

There's a lock on those. I don't remember exactly cause I haven't used mine for so long. I think you pull the hand wheel out, towards the tailstock, to loosen.

Looking at the front of the chuck, there is the holder that tightens the collet. Then there is a larger, about 5" diameter steel ring that is notched. This ring pulls out to unlock the aluminum hand wheel and allows it to turn.
Counterclockwise will release the collet.

DR, JC, THANKS MUCH! Your imput solved my dilema. IOWOLF, I only wish I'd have had the instructions! I can't thank you Guys enough and more importantly SWMBO, thanks you as well. she was getting very bored with me talking to myself.

I should also admit to a Duh! I was not investigative enough to identify this for myself. I will not use my unfamiliaraity with this chuck as an excuse.

I am grateful that there is such a resource as this board. You Guys are just the best! http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net//biggrin.gif
