Well, I thought I had repairing this 98-8 level under control but Mr. Murphy has stepped in! I located and ordered the new vial for $11.80 from Starrett (nice folks, by the way). Then, assuming that the ends screwed in, put it in the vise and attempted to unscrew said ends - didn't work! After a call to the repair dept at Starrett, I found out that the ends are press fit and they have a machine to remove them - so I made a gizmo out of a couple 1/4" 'J' bolts and a couple blocks with some nuts and washers to lever them out. It must be putting tremendous pressure on the assembly, but still no cigar as the 'J' bolts start trying to straighten out. Any and all suggestions will be appreciated and acted upon within the bounds of my limited shop resources.

Hi Skip,

I just did a google search for "starrett level repair" and came up with a lot of good info.

Look here:
http://www.practicalmachinist.com/vb/general/starrett-level-vial-replacement-173577/

I didn't read the whole thread, but it starts out by answering the question of how to remove the end caps and vial.

Hope this helps.

Brian
