Will this work on aluminium without damaging it, how much material does it take off? It can cause some problems on cast iron (if you press too hard or keep it in one spot for more than three seconds). I'd just like to get rid of the scoring that bandsaws create after a cut ...

I don’t know what sort of wire wheel you’re talking about but I think you’d need a stainless steel one and never use it for anything else besides aluminium.

You might be better with abrasive flapper disks in an angle grinder (use a fine grade). Just spray lightly with cooking oil before using to stop it clogging.

where as sand blasting left it like this

and i hear ..that bicarbonate of soda blasting will leave it polished to a nice sheen..like new

Depends on the aluminum. It kinda 'eats' aluminum in my experiance. Maybe those plastic+abrasive impregnated wire wheels would do better.

For cleaning up after a bandsaw, id just use a single cut file (Really BIG gullets/teeth for alumimum to prevent cloging) or a belt sander or similar.

Honda K-series trans?

Baking soda leaves a little smoother finish than what you have there. The walnut shells will polish it like it was before but all over and in the corners. Eastwood has a nice selection of blasting medias and say what each one does.

it's a PG1 gearbox that i believe was developed by Honda when Honda were joint owners of rover .

so in the end .I thought it would go that way again ..what with all the salt they put on uk roads.

so after rebuilding it, with new bearings and seals.

I etched primed it and painted it with alloy wheel paint ..

wish i had a sand blasting cabinet ...

you think I can put the parts in a plastic container of sand, and then put that in the drier, for about two hours? The parts are small ...

these are 80G; they also come in 50 (green) and 120 (white), and a real coarse one (purple I think) for removing undercoating and gasket sealant.

The flexibility makes them very smooth and controllable, no gouging, and they don't load up.

That thing is identical to a B-series honda transmission except all completely backwards. The K-series motors are backwards, that is why I thought it was a K trans. When I was first looking at the pics I thought your pics were reversed somehow but then I saw some writing on a paper in one pic and it was the right way.

Did Honda have plastic caged bearings ..this was the main failing on them ..so i hear ..they become brittle with age and break up ..nearly all the bearings in mine i replaced with good makes of steel caged bearings .

or people damaged diff oil seals removing driveshafts at clutch change ..so they lost their oil..from then on .

that didn't happen to mine ..

they were all just noisy ..think something to do with rover not putting transmission oil change on the service schedule.

also important to use the correct oil which was called MTF94.
