Are the numbers given for electric motor starters standardized in any way, and where might I find a good source of info about which size for which horsepower? Thanks in advance. Art

You can get a chart at your local industrial supply house.

NECA books have charts also.

starters (NEMA ones) are sized by numbers, 00,1,2,3,an so on. This is horsepower, say a size 1 will handle up to 5 hp. or so at 480 volts. They have thermals then sized to protect the motor. This is electromechanical starters not manual ones. The larger the number the larger the starter. Manual starters are commonly set with a thermal sized to protect the motor. I hope this helps you some. Most electrical suppliers can give you much more info on their products as well. Good luck.

what kind of application is this motor going to
do. Is it continous run or a lot of start stop,if so then you need the next size up overloads, as this is considered as a jogging mode.
