Push down on the stem of the micrometer and it will return, but sticks along the way.

What do you use to prevent this? Electrical cleaning spray? sewing machine oil?

Prevention? Buy a Mitutoyo, Starrett, Brown & Sharp, Etalon or other quality make and don't drop it. ;)

The fix? If it's one of those good ones, send it back to the maker for repair. If it's a $12.95 China micrometer, bin it and refer to the prevention method.

Seriously, I give my micrometers a drop or two (at most) of Starrett Instrument Oil once a year whether they need it or not.

Actually, I have no idea what you are talking about. My micrometers have a thimble, and except in the case of my 2 depth micrometers, an anvil that meets the thimble's connected rotating spindle. What kind of micrometer do you have that has a "stem"?

Probably means a dial indicator. If so, a couple drops of lighter fluid might help get rid of congealed oil and grime on the stem.

Use isopropyl alcohol 91%+, you can get it at the pharmacy, and real cotton swaps.
