My son's Cub Scout pack has a fairly nice 3-lane track which someone built in the late 70's-early 80's. Originally, it had a simple electronic device someone made using micro switches and a spaghetti wired circuit board which would display the order across the finish line with a set of 3 LED's above each lane.

The electronic "timer" has long since quit working and nobody has the knowledge (or time) to research it to get it working again.

Does anyone know of a simple mechanical system I could make which would indicate the order of cars across the finish line?

The electronics timer would be simpler than anything mechanical, and more accurate.

I was just searching online and found someone who did a hack of a cheapo calculator and used microswitches to tie into the "1", "2", and "3" keys... The cars run over the switches and the display on the calculator will read out the order across the line. That sounds doable for a luddite like me...
