This is a Crane I built for my Ford Ranger alone with the latest job.
A sump pump from a ship that has a bearing housing worn out in the "blind hole end"

Is all the weight born on the hitch in the center or is there an attachment at the crane base to prevent the unit from torquing the center out of the tow hitch?

I see a rod extending down to the ground. Check near the front left corner of the blue footplate of the crane, it's not painted and in the shadow, so it's kind of hard to see.

Yes there is a leveling/support leg on the outside.
(an old double start 1.125 acme with a beaing pad on bottom)
And a locking joint (turnbuckle) that ties into the hitch in the middle of the bar.
The Crane itself came from Princess Auto at 159.95
The support leg was made from 2" sq tube.

That pump housing was approx 75 lbs....just testing it .
Worked great. Back saver for a one man shop . :)

I built one a few years ago. Cheap takedown model bolted to a base that allows me to mount to the hitch or to a set of legs I built. The legs now have casters and I have a stabilizer that slides onto the offset piece near the hoist base for support. I have lifted around 550-600lbs with it and no ill effects. Handy when you work alone.

Do you have a finished picture of the frame with the wheels
That's my next plan....to make a small "cherry picker" from the same crane.
It needs to pivot 180 or a little less and be able to move /lift up to 500 lbs.
(after 500 someone else can have it...)

Have a real picker now, but too big and clumsey...lol

I built this one 12 years ago and still have it. The crane runs in large taper roller bearings and has a worm and gear drive so it stays put instead of wondering around. I have picked up a Dodge 360 truck engine with all accessories at 3/4 reach and swung it around into my trailer.
It's really handy and only weighs around 100kg, so it's like carrying a mate around but it can lift more.

Motorworks: No pics with wheels, but I used some 3" tall cast iron casters from Northern. Welded them at the rear corner and front edge of the longitudinal legs. The legs can be slid in/out widthwise to accomodate the object being lifted. The support I used for the offset is just a pivoting trailer tongue jack welded to a piece of box tube that slides over the receiver tube (outboard end of the offset).

I used tractor hitch pins at the pivot points to make it easy to take apart and tossed the supplied chicom hardware. Legs are secured with weld nuts and bolts to pinch them in place. Initially built it to lift some heavy stuff off of pallets, but now used mainly to lift heavy stuff into the van. The heavy lifting is for those with strong backs and weak minds.

WOW! What a great truck!:D I could use something like that. Maybe I'll build one someday.;)

It took me 3 1/2 years to build it from the ground up. The body went to the blasters on a roll over frame etc. I fitted a commodore 3800cc eco tech V6 (buick type V6) all fully engineered.
I never built it as a show truck, but it has won 44 trophies from 36 shows so far.
