Malc the scrappy [ retired ] just been round to say there is a 'big bucket ' his words, of tungsten carbide end mills in the yard.

Brought one round as a sample, an 8mm one and it's brand spanking new. :)

See you all later............................................. .

Don't you need a fairly rigid milling machine to run carbide?

Got back a bit ago, pics later 'cause it's not a gloat without.

Phil,
I got the keep the new cutter whether I went down the yard or not, Malc just helps himself, he worked for them for long enough.

Anyway the big bucket wasn't a bucket, it was a plastic tub about a foot cube and nearly full, bloody heavy to boot.
Some new, some in good nick and some chipped and worn.

I thought I'd take a chance on the whole tub and put it on the scales, went over at £96 so bugger that decided to sort thru as there was a lot of big stuff in there, 20 to 25mm and most of that was worn.

Not worn enough to be scrap but I don't want to get into re-sharpening. Sorted out about 4 big handfuls, all good or new, you'll see in the pic later, dropped them on the scales and came to £30, not bad but always a chancer I thought I could do better so challenged Wayne to 3 goes at arm wrestling and finished up paying £35 for them.

What geriatric 64 year old wrinkly in his right mind thinks he can beat a 40 year old built like a brick sh1thouse, scrap man ?

Answers on the back of the spare fiver please.

Aw, that's too bad John -- you can't use metric endmills in an Imperial machine. You'll either have to get rid of the Bridgeport, or the endmills :)

Awesome score Sir John. But to be honest, I doubt you have room for them in your shop. I could be talked into making room, And since I'm somewhat forcing myself to do you such a fantastic favour out of kindness, It would only be fair if you paid for the shipping costs.:D

LOL, Good one.
But I really couldn't allow you to put youself out like that. Since I offered to shoulder the full burden, Then it really wouldn't be fair to you. I'm far too nice and insist on taking on all of the problems. Sir John can publicly thank me later.:D

Sorting some pics out at the moment.

Weird, the box weighed 17 kg and was priced at £96.
Converting kg to pounds and UKP to $$ I make it $4.09 a pound.

Going on those prices I reckon I got about 6.2Kg or nearly 14lbs.

This was the haul, 50 cutters, top row right are all used but good, top row left are all good regrinds.

bottom row are all new or look like it, the darker ones are Tain ? coated, that run dry coating. Far right are high helix alloy cutters.

As an idea on size that big one is 20mm by 120mm long and the smallest ones on the bottom are 8mm shank.

All the 4 flute cutters are centre cutting plunge cutters, in fact you don't see the ones with the pip in the middle unless they are old stock.

This is the second bundle in less than a year and I don't know what I'm missing. Wayne has my number and I'm literally 1/4 mile away but he never rings and it take Malc to pop in and tell me.
