I have a 7"Ammco shaper and would like to know what kind of vise everyone is using. I've looked for used South Bend shaper vises with no luck. Does anyone sell plans for that type of vise?

Being that you already have the shaper, I would use that to do the majority of the work to reproduce/fab one. They are pretty ridiculously simple in design, so the biggest part would be taking measurements if you wanted originality. IMHO those vises are nice, but I would rather have a larger, maybe two piece vise.

Here is a link to a drawing of an Ammco vise:

Good luck.

Anyone still selling any shaper vise casting kits?

Never fear, you can do a lot on your shaper without a vise and I suspect a lot is done in a vice that would be better clamped to the table.

Someone one the Atlas Shapers Yahoo group actually did a run of castings for the Atlas vise, considered by many to be better than the SB design.
You might check on there.

Only 2 things really differentiate a shaper vise from what I can see:

mounting pattern
Overall height

I don't think either of these is critical for most applications. I'd look for a low-profile 4" milling vise. Palmgren used to make a nice one.
Barring that, you may have to settle for a 3" angle-lock clone like LMS sells.

My dearly departed friend Art Volz of the Houston Metal Working Club had drawings of the Ammco vise. I know I helped him with some dimension when I owned a Ammco.
Don't know where he posted the drawings. He was a member of the Yahoo Shaper Group, or the Yahoo Lewis Shaper Group also, so maybe that will lead you to paydirt

You can see one fellows work here

I seem to remember that Craig Donges had a casting set for the 7" shaper vises.
He may be at Cabin Fever this year.

I've been pondering a two piece vise for my 12" shaper.. I'd be willing
to trade 'swivel' for 'low profile.

however, my table is a 2 piece (can rotate) -- maybe they're all like
that.. and when taking heavy-ish cuts I can see the seam "breathe" a bit..
it opens, I don't know.. 0.002-005" or so.. just discernable by eye.

here's a pic:

I'd be afraid a 2pc vise could "let go" (since the jaws would be on two separate
parts of the table).

Its hasn't been a big deal to date.. either I take lighter cuts or jack the table
up a bit to "preload" it while its locked. Wouldn't work though if I was
using the table to change height during cuts.

What about one of those 2 piece mill vises. That would give you a low profile.
