View Full Version : 4-jaw chuck for my Atlas 10"

The chuck on my old Atlas (Babbitt bearings) is a 3-jaw, 5 inch and weighs 7.5 pounds. The 4-jaw chuck I just received fron Enco is 6 inch and weighs a massive 27 pounds. To me, a perennial newby, this chuck looks just plain too heavy for the lathe!

Should I just get rid of it and look for a smaller 4-jaw? (Why didn't I just ask you real machinists first???)

I don't think that will be any problem. I'm sure you keep the bearing lubed. Compare that to the babbit rod bearings in automobile engines that have much higher loads I expect.
