View Full Version : fowler micrometer help

I just got a fowler deep digital micrometer with the point and flat anvil. The problem is that when you turn the handle, the anvil doesn't move. I opened it up and there is what looks like a brake drum (the encoder?) and 4 set screws. They look like they should clamp on the spimdle. If I tighten them do I run the risk of damaging it or are they there to zero the micrometer readout and nobody ever tightened them. It is brand new still in the plastic bag and wood box.

Figured out the spindle, it was a loose screw inside the friction thimble. Now the display is not sensing spindle movement. I did not touch the encoders. The manual says if the display acts confused to remove the battery and short the springs? Does Fowler support older models? It is a disc brake micrometer according to the model#, deep throat and 0.3"-1.3" range. Should be good for something other than brake calipers if I can get it working.
