I bought a very old (1950s) vertical Mikron mill some time ago and the man I bought it from had converted it from the original flat belt drive to V belt. Originally they were 3 phase two speed motors producing a max of 2000rpm, well it would only do about 800rpm the way he'd converted it. So today I tinkered about with various pulleys I had amassed over the years and fitted two step pulleys to the motor and countershaft. The speed range is now 300 to 1700 rpm, I only use cutters from 1/16 to 1/2 inch and a flycutter 1-1/4 inch diameter, do you think this may be OK ? David

1/16th is small and should be fast , unless you have lots of them to break .
my manual machine runs about 1200-2300 most of the time for 3/16 -1/2'' and fly cutters . id think you'd be fine except the 1/16' .

Ditto on too slow for the 1/16th cutters and also for 1/8th. Even for 3/16 this is on the slow side. Here is a feed & speed chart you may find useful
