I'm right on the flight path coming in & out of Bradley on top of a hill and were they ever close.

Suprising for how big they are, how small inside the cockpit. Is there still 2 flying in the US? Top of my list is to solo a DC-3. Still flying people, cargo & drugs since 1935. Mow that's amazing!:D

FiFi is the only air worthy B-29 as far as I'm aware. There is/was a second air frame undergoing a full overhaul but I'm not sure what the progress is. The cost of flying a B29 has to be horrific, I can't imagine chugging along guzzling thousands of pounds of avgas.

Did manage one flight while in the navy. Flew from terahon to Rota Spain. Still had the seats like in the old WWII movies. Was a lot of fun to hear those piston engines rev up for takeoff. Very noisy plane to fly in but enjoyed every minute. Frank

Fifi was in Mobile a few months ago. Very cool to see and hear. I talked to the crew a bit and if I recall he said at a conservative speed it burns 400 gal per hour.
On a side note there was a P-51 here with it as well and a local guy paid the money to go for a ride. He was on the news a bit because the landing gear would not drop when it was time to land. They flew around until most of the fuel was gone and prepared for a belly landing but got the gear to work at the last minute.

I flew on WWII Grumman Grey Goose 2 engine sea planes in Alaska. They were the planes used by Alaska Airlines in the 1950's. They would nearly shake your teeth out!!

Got to go aboard FIFI when she was in Hampton years ago. Wonder where they still get the tires for her?

They said they only fly about 1500 ft. altitude these days.

They still fly these here. There are two left and both are still in operational service as water bombers. I used to work for the company that converted them back in the 70's.

1988 or 89 Fifi was in Longview Texas for the airshow Flew in, landed, taxied and parked until the end of the weekend, taxied and flew out. At that time they said it cost $800 per hour to operate her...

And teh first pilots were a couple 110 lb WACs. The guys were too chicken to fly the 29's so they got a couple of the little gals that were ferrying them to break the guys in. But then those little gals were the first ones to fly all the lastest stuff during World War 2...


Can you believe there were missions with as many as 235 B29's over Japan...
