View Full Version : Got some new indicators

Several weeks ago, I destroyed my trusty 30 year old Fowler dial indicator. This the one that I keep in a tool holder to dial in work on my 4 jaw.

I decided to buy a new indicator to replace it. So, I bought 2. The first is a Starrett 25-631J which measures 1" overall and is graduated in .0005". I will keep that one in my tool holder for general dial-in work. I also bought a Starrett 25-209J which measures .006" full range and is graduated in .00005 increments for close in work.

Just for grins, I dialed in a brand new wrist pin that I had gotten for testing with the 25-631J in the 4 jaw, and was able to get it to less than .0005" tir in short order. Then I put the 25-209J in the tool holder and dialed in the wrist pin to less than .0001" tir. It took a few minutes of fiddling with it, but I got it.

These indicators are very nice, smooth operating and well finished. The only thing I don't like about them is the plastic bezel ring. It seems to me that a quality indicator should not have plastic showing.:(

No tool gloat here, I paid full price for them.:D
