:p Everyone shows pictures of nice shiny new looking lathes. Well I think we should have an uglest lathe contest & I think I'll win. Saw a 16"swing South Bend for $400. Ser# 5702hkrlo so I had to go look. Man is it ever ugly! But it has a quick change gearbox, runs great, everything works as it should, isn't worn out, is 230V sng phase but it's missing 1 cover, 1 door on the base, has a crack in 1 leg & is by far the ugliest lathe I've owned. OSHA could use this like GM uses crash dummy's. Guess what, I bought it for $200 & drove away happy once more. So go ahead & post your pics & I'll take some Sunday & trump them all. I really think George should make this an annual event with a new lathe for the winner. Good luck & may the ugliest win! (Lathe, not owner). :p :p
Here's a great link to the SB numbering system http://www.wswells.com/serial_number.html .

How can you have a beauty (or lack thereof) competition without pictures.? You can't possibly win, you're disqualified.:D

Man, and I thought airguns were addictive :-)! What do you do with more than one? Anyway, here's mine, although I think it's beautiful, I doubt most would agree:

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x226/daved20319/Machining/Lathe003.jpg

I had no business buying used machine tools when I bought this, knew absolutely nothing about them, but I got lucky, this has turned out to be the perfect machine for me and my purposes, working on those airguns I mentioned earlier. Later.

If you're one that paints your machines, you're a couple steps ahead in the the stripping.

This amazing artifact was excavated from an 8th century Viking long boat burial. Note the superb craftmanship of the late 20th century angle iron tailstock riser upgrade.

Totally not fair but - How about a little "Before and After" competition

Before .....

http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/aa83/Freakindj/Lathe/Leblond003.jpg

and After ....

http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/aa83/Freakindj/Lathe/DSCF0249.jpg

notice ALL the missing parts have now been procured...

I originally bought it to part out on Eboner until all of you guys complained I should in no way part out such a fine machine

There are so many missing teeth on that lathe it must be English!

What do you have when you have 34 Englishmen sitting on the front row?

One full set of teeth!

flylo
06-24-2012, 03:05 PM
You win with the lack of teeth. The SB actually is mechanically sound & runs fine but you have to admit it's butt ugly!
As far as before & after I have a bunch of alum diamond plate. I ought to bend some up & paint the ole girl. Another project added to the list. Contrats!

Not quite finished yet, as you can see by the still-rusty side covers, but it is 80% complete.

Not a lathe and not quite as obviously ugly as that Hendy, but notice the fine high quality replacement knee crank (you can see the handle right in front of the cross feed wheel). Also notice the 2" layer of dirt and gravel on the base below the knee.

It may not be THE ugliest lathe, but it's certainly the ugliest one I ever drug home.

http://www.gofastforless.com/junk/WSlathe06.jpg

http://www.gofastforless.com/junk/WSlathe07.jpg

It took a scraper, stiff brush and couple gallons of kerosene to get through the years of gritty grime.
