I bought a Cadillac lathe a while back...had a bolt in the carriage hand wheel. I've been to busy to do anything about it until today. I don't like the stationary handles and I didn't want a hole in the end. I dug through the bin and found some bearings I'd bought a while back..0.375 ID and .910 OD. I bored out a piece of 1.125 7075 to accept the bearing as a press fit, as well as a retainer I turned to reinforce the press fit, then cut 3/4-16 threads on the other end, with a 1/2" through hole for an Allen key to access the bolt that holds it to the hand wheel. I tapped the same 3/4-16 female threads in
another chunk of 7075 to thread on offer the bearing assembly is fastened. Came out nice, makes the lathe a bit more pleasurable to use

Very nice.

A job done right the first time that will be a pleasure to use for a lifetime.

Great fix. So often we see handwheels of all sorts with a lowly old bolt stuck in there.
