Wondering if anyone has run across any good mill vise bargains out there recently? I'm not really looking for a "kit" as I don't have a surface grinder but a decent usable accurate mill vise. In the either of the following sizes 4" 5" 6".....its going on a millirite. thank you

+1 Glacern.

If you can't find a good used one or a good (expensive) European vise then the only other choice is a cheap Chinese Kurt copy. Sometimes you get a really good one and sometimes they are useless crap. I bought a 5" one at Cabin Fever a couple of years ago from Little Machine Shop (how they would fit a 5" vise onto the small mills they cater to I will never know) and it was a really good one. Not completely up to Kurt standards but darn close and good enough for most home shops.

Found a d60 near me. I know this doesn't open as far as the other Kurts but is it otherwise a good design?

D60 is built to the same standards as the other Kurts and fine for a Millrite. You can machine a plate wider than 12" by putting the jaws in the outer positions of either a D50 or D60 (larger still). The longer Kurts really have too much overhang IMO for a small mill. Just make sure it's in good shape.

I'm just in the process, FWIW, of swapping out a pair of perfectly good D50's for a pair of D40's. Even these smaller vises are fine for the work many do -- and having a pair is perfect for longer work.

D50 sounds about the right size? Where are you located?

Northern CA; you may want to look closer.

The ride could be expensive....

Robo,
Yeah I'd agree, good repeatable vises are expensive, but they are worth what they cost. That took me a long time and too much wasted money to figure out.

a photo of a Stanier vice that I think would be good for me, size wise but have looked for a couple of days and have not been able to find a North American supplier...thanks for the note Uncle Pete :D

Hey Russ,
Happy New Year, cold enough for you yet? LOL, Yeah don't blow all your money at that site, it can be a real candy store. That Stanier looks to be just about the perfect size and height without the swivel base for our Atlas mills. If you do find out anything, then I'd appreciate a heads up.
