So is there a program that will allow you to make sketches and the like, other than CAD? Or maybe even free?

It sounds like you may be looking for a 2D only CAD program, but in case you're not, I've been very happy with PTC's Creo Elements Direct Modeling Express (http://www.ptc.com/products/creo-elements-direct/modeling-express/). It's a 3D solid modeling package that's quite capable, and best of all, free! You can make dimensioned 2D drawings from the 3D solids once you've created them. Hope this helps!

Try Google Sketchup. It's free and there are tons of drawings already uploaded that you can use as templates.

And one (free) open source: LibreCAD

I've tried Sketchup. Really tried to give it a chance, but I just can't wrap my head around it. For 2D CAD I use DraftSight and for general drawing/sketching I use Inkscape. Both are free downloads and easier to use than Google Sketchup.

Google "Autocad Clone"

Identical to Autocad, and yes, you can save your work.
