Fly Fishing Reels

I've done some checking on the Web without much success. Can anyone point me toward any resources for fly fishing reel plans or exploded drawings, material specifications etc? I'm thinking ahead toward next Christmas and would like to try my hand at making a fly reel for one of my brothers who is an avid fisherman.

How difficult is such a project? Any of you done this before?

The patent office has thousands, in intimate detail. International classsification A 01 K is a good start. Exploded views and schematics come from manufacturer's websites.

There are many forums like this one for fishing, divided into categories for fly, freshwater, offshore etc. I wouldn't waste my time with the Ol' Paw's board though. (not to go against you Alistair, but if you look you'll see that very few replies are ever posted.) You can do a lot better.
