I am looking for a magnifier lamp as a gift for an elderly family member's work bench. I like my ring light version quite a lot, and am wondering how these harbor freight units are? I'm guessing the lens is plastic, anyone know?

Also, I know LEDs are making inroads, but I'm not sure how they compare to the old fluorescent ring lights.

Try it before you buy it. I bought a cheap one. The light worked okay but the distortion from the lousy lens made it unusable.

You can sometimes get the original US made high quality units on ebay for cheap if you don't mind used.

I purchased a cheap Busy Bee Craftex (Chinese made) and the quality is surprisingly good, lens is as good as my old US made unit.
I did find the fluorescent tube did not last as long (electronic ballast) , so I picked up a couple of spare tubes and switch it off when not in use.
It looks a bit sturdier than the H.F. and is slightly more $.
Max.

My mom couldn't use the fluorescent or the LED. Seems the wave lenght of light washed everything out. I had to find one with a standard light.

Something to take into consideration.
