View Full Version : Modifying spring ends

Seems the spring I need is never available, so I settle for something close, then halfway destroy it trying to bend the ends the way I need them. I'm working on a new product that I hope to bring to market, but need
to get 10 or so units up and running first for testing... Had a hard time with the quote from the spring shop of $300 for 20 springs.

I started making bending jigs...they all sucked. As I was ready to kick something across the shop, I noticed a bolt sitting on the floor (amongst other stuff, but that's not important)...1/2-13...and as it happens...it threads right into the spring. Cool..clamped it in the vise, the threads prevented the coils from getting buggered up, and the ends were easy to make a nice clean bend. I ordered a left hand thread bolt to do the LH wound springs.

Maybe someone can benefit from this tip. Most of us have lathes...use more of a round forming tool to turn the appropriate thread and you could have an even better tool for this .
