I have seen the question before of whether or not it's safe to run a digital caliper across an electric de-magnetizer but I don't know if it was answered or not, this chip problem has annoyed me for a long time. I keep a couple of HF digital calipers on hand for general use and both were quite "grabby" when close to chips but I assumed the de-magnatizer would ruin them, it occurred to me that these are HF calipers so what if it did ruin them? I pulled both of them across the de-magnatizer several times and it produced no ill effects at all so just for chits and giggles I grabbed my hardly ever used Mitutoyo calipers and pulled them across also with no ill effects at all, at least none that I can see so I guess doing this is harmless. Just thought I would mention this in case someone else might be wondering about it.
I use the cheap HF calipers for general shop use so dropping them or other abuse is no real problem but my preferred caliper is my mint condition but 30 year old B&S dial calipers.
