I thought I would see what Craig's list might have to offer, and I found this huge lot of tools only about 10 miles from me. I'm not sure what some things are, or how much he is asking for them. Probably worth a trip for a look-see.

Particularly, what are these tools?

And what are the levers on these chucks?

This is a nice tool chest:

And this is quite a box of goodies:

These photos are some of the finest machinist (excuse my French!) porn!!!

This guy was serious about stuff, whatever he was doing.

First photo, a custom built box containing bore micrometers from 1/4" (?) - 2"(?) Etalon brand I think. It would be extremely rare for a machinist in any shop to have these as his personal tools. They are probably worth $200.00 each and there are 14! I would hazard a guess that there are some setting rings for these somewhere in the rest of the pile.

Second photo, they aren't chucks they are releasing die heads.

Third photo, yes that is a very nice box and it has some very nice stuff in it.

Does he list prices for any of it? And do you notice how clean everything is? This looks like a lifetime collection, whoever it was didn't acquire this stuff last week, but it is obvious to me that he took care of his tools.

The tools in the top pick are bore gauges. Look like mitutoyo. A lot of money right there.

Those chucks are geometric die heads. They are normally used for threading on a turret lathe.

The first are micrometers for measuring inside diameter. Differ than others in that they have three points of contact. Very nice. If it's a name brand those are worth a lot.

Second...those are geometric die heads. Used to cut threads and when a certain length is reached the cutters clutch out and you retract head. Then you use the handle to reset the cutters in the head for the next thread. Typically used on turret style machines but useable on a lathe.

If he is truly less than eBay prices there's probably some good stuff there to buy...of course I'd bet he's not :)

Those Bore Micrometers in the first picture are worth a FORTUNE!!
Those list on Ebay anywhere from $150 to $400 EACH!! And there sits a complete set of 14..... ZOINKS!!!

That wooden toolbox in the third picture looks like a GERSTNER. Another high-dollar item.

Those die heads aren't Geometrics, but they are a similar style. A real Geometric the size of the big one tends to go for north of $700 on eBay. With the whole cabinetful of spare chasers, if you got it all for $1,500, you'd be doing pretty good.

As above, the boxful of bore mics would be a deal at $2K.

Some of the rest isn't so valuable- the bottom drawer of the banana box has a lot of cutting tools that are all jumbled together- the drills probably aren't too bad, but you can just about bet the reamers are dinged up

Lotsa good stuff there, but the phrase "below eBay" tells me he knows more or less what they're worth. You may well get a fair price, but I doubt you'll get a "screaming deal". It is, however, worth a trip- personally, I'd go just to talk to the guy, hear a few stories, maybe buy an extra set of 1-2-3's. You never know, he might have it all priced at "get it out of my yard".

Doc.

I would definitely investigate those Bore Mics.
Wave $500 CASH in front of his face, and see if he bites. :)

Ditto. Anytime I see that phrase I cringe. " less than eBay " is like saying less than retail. Yay! Still, you never know.

Agreed. I always say I quit buying tools a long time ago because I kind of have two or three of everything and just don't need much anymore. But if that stuff were near me I'd be very interested. It's really good stuff man.
I'd be interested in a LOT of what is pictured. It's a gloat at $500. If I walked away with the lot for a grand I wouldn't complain at all. I sure would enjoy using those bore mics and I'd try to wrestle those things off him for sure.
The Kennedy box full of tools is kind of obligatory craigslist machinist stuff, but I'd guess it's probably a pretty darned decent range of useful things rather than the useless brazed carbide lathe tools and dull drill bits you usually see on CL.

edit to add - OK on second look most of the Kennedy box is obligatory CL machinist surplus stuff. But the other stuff I still find very interesting.

I have not received a reply to my email, and there is no phone number for contact. He also has had some machinist materials listed, but that was from April:

Ok, but he responds with an email at 2:00 in the morning, and his name is Louisette Orlando, and he needs you to wire him the money cause he is in the UK...

I was chasing down a generator in CL in Seattle, and after a strange message googled this guy; 5th hit was from a mountain bike forum, and doggone if that guy in NJ didn't get the exact same message that I did (except substitute "expensive bike" for "expensive generator")... from Louisette Orlando... he must travel to the UK a lot if he was just there 4 weeks ago when the bike guy emailed him... :D

You would think the 411 scammer would at least change his name...

Hi,
Thanks for being interested in buying my Generac QuietSource Series 22K Watt Liquid Cooled Generator .
I will start my email by telling you that I'm currently out of country so pick up isn't an option. The generator is as described, in perfect condition and will be delivered at your home address. Total price will be $1,150.00 and the transaction will be made only through eBay because i am not in the country anymore and this way it's safer for both . Right now I'm in United Kingdom, just arrived here 3 days ago. Before I left I found a buyer and I had everything arranged. I paid for the shipping and almost sent it to him. But yesterday the buyer that I had asked me to wait another 4 weeks because he suddenly had other priorities and he is out of money for the moment. I can't wait this long as I'm in United Kingdom for 3 days now and i really need the money, I am in the moving process, changing the work place and everything. A major issue is that if you want to buy my generator you really need to have the money ready for it. If you are interested reply me for further instructions on how will you be able to get possession of the generator . I am waiting for your answer.

Warmest regards,
Louisette Orlando
