Front endish collide twix late model BMW and a domestic compact has resulted in deployment of airbag in compact, but not in the BMW.

Question: Does year model 2013 BMW bag deployment require the seatbelt system to be engaged/latched, for the arming of it's airbag? Yes/No?

The seat belt does not have to be fastened. Maybe the impact was just not hard enough to trigger the airbag.

Physics!

The acceleration on the compact was obviously sufficient to trigger the airbag system, whereas it was lower on the BMW, likely due to larger mass.

I would expect a modern day car to have two deployment thresholds, one for with and one without seatbelt worn. Especially in the US where some people consider wearing a belt a freedom issue. Ah well, Darwin described the solution to that problem.
