Well, we got the job done. I made up a simple die and held it in place with magnets on our Grizzly 4" milling machine vise:

Feeding it through a little at a time, we got a nice result, I think:

This may be a long shot, but hey Frank, if you're still on this forum, would ya be willing to sell me that little die ya made to square the end of the speedo cable?

OR CarlD
I have to tool to do the square end Frank. If you want I will ship it to you and you use it and ship it back.

Do you want me to post a photo if you want to make one?

Could ya post some pics of the tool ya have and maybe explain to me how to mill my own?

Thanks,
Mutt

I believe this is the page from Frank's website that explains the process he used to build the dies.

... all I ever did was dip the end of the cable in hot lead and hammered it square.

Thanks Willy, that's exactly what I needed to know. Now I just need to find me a 45 angle block. Wouldn't it be much easier to just put the 2 pieces in a 12 ton press and pres it into shape instead of using the vise?

I would very definitely use a press, if you have access to one. As Franks' page notes, that's how he (or rather, his helper) broke a mill vise. A big Kurt would obviously be a lot stronger than that cheap Grizzly import they broke, but still, that's a lotta force on the mechanism. Use a press if ya got one.
