I may be wrong. I thought "foam rubber" was a thing. I went to home depot and walked the entire place. I thought they would have some foam rubber. My Bust!!

I saw a guy walking, HD dude. He asks me, need any help. I say yes thank you, foam rubber? A group of office folks "managers" were right there doing their simpletons inspection.

I say, do you have foam rubber.

It was comical, they all looked at each other, while wearing the HD orange colored vests.

Foam rubber is a thing right???

I wanted some for my Home Shop. I need some of the high density, pliable foam. I have some from years back. Can't seem to locate it. Black in color... JR

There are those interlocking floor mats, they are made from PVA foam. I have friends who use it for cosplay, this ironman suit was made from it, it is high density, soft and glueable.

Yes, foam rubber is a thing.

Yes, in flooring. Maybe they were amused at how blind you were, having walked the entire store and not saw it. The entire store is "mapped" and exact item location (aisle and bay) logged via GPS or similar, available on the HD smart phone app. So who's the simpleton, you or them?

I would expect about the only place in HD where you would find foam rubber would be in the area where they sell weather stripping & door gaskets, etc. You'd have better luck at McMaster-Carr. There is a place nearby me that sells, belting, rubber hoses, rubber mats and other rubber things. They have the foam I'm pretty sure you are looking for. Anything like that near you? What about a local plastics supplier?

If you end up mail ordering it... McMaster-Carr's page on foam rubber might help you describe it properly. There are many types.

Old mouse pads are a source of neoprene (wetsuit material). Craft stores sell foams of various types.

There is also that closed cell packing foam that is kinda interesting for some stuff. It is sold at hd, etc in the packing section. Funny thing - bunch some of that up, hold it in a vise and hit it with a hammer. Almost 100% of the energy is reflected back into the hammer, which I think is kinda interesting. Yes, I am easily amused. It does illustrate how some foam doesn't necessarily absorb energy from impacts.

It's not a thing, but a world.....

There are only about 10000 kinds of foam "rubber" and then you get into the other elastomers....

Open cell, closed cell, what "durometer" (stiffness)? Does it need to be "rubber"? What kind.... EPDM, Buna, silicone etc? Can it be some other elastomer instead of actual "rubber"?

Best thing is to find and squeeze, and decide....

Some types have bad features, though. Some break down and crumble after a few years. They may leave sticky and/or corrosive breakdown products.

Much of the "Type" of rubber you need will depend on what you are going to be doing with it. There are under the rug foam pads that you could get at a carpet store. If you need thick foam, check with a local mattress factory, but carry a large wallet as that stuff is costly. The density of the foam adds to the cost. "K" mart used to sell the "Egg-crate" foam for packing delicate breakable things. What it sounds like you need is "Cow Mats". Try an Ag supplier like Tractor Supply. If all else fails check with a local dairy farmer or machine shop.

Most fabric stores sell upholstery foam in various thicknesses. Home depot sells, or used to sell, dense closed-cell floor mats by the yard (I have some in front of my lathe and mill).
