Hey guys, this is my first post. I have a grizzly g0704 and I'm interested in getting a cheap for for it. I have plans on adding flood coolant to it and I was wondering if magnetic scales are coolant proof/resistant. This is the scale I'm considering http://www.grizzly.com/products/24-Remote-Digital-Readout/T26627 any other tips about these readouts are appreciated.

What kind of things are you planning on making with while using the scale?

I'm sure you noticed that scale is marketed toward woodworking. The accuracy and repeatably is fairly low for a lot of machinist work, and you are missing out on a lot of nice features that are on even some of the cheapest DRO's. If you used that scale, you would definitely have to make some sort of cover, which is definitely doable, but another cost and time to consider. If you don't make a cover shavings will easily land on that scale and as you move the table they can get jammed in the reader.

I know it's a lot more, but I would recommend something like this:

It comes with the covers, and they work pretty good. You might be able to call DROpros, and just buy one scale (but you might as well get both). They carry the exact same scale as grizzly here:

I know it cost more, but you get what you pay for, and it will be a lot more useful in the future.

if you do go the igaging route, you can get a 24in standard and a 6in absolute (supposedly higher accuracy) for less than that one scale off eBay. I got a set for $95 I think for my Atlas 618, 3rd on my project list :)

Since you have a mill, why would to want to add a digital readout to only one axis? If I had to do it, all three axis would get the scales, which is exactly what I did with my mill. Here is like on how to do it.

Yeah I noticed. Are the dros for dropros coolant resistant?

I've had a set of those scales on one of my mills for years now. I don't flood the table with coolant, but I've cut and drill all kinds of materials from dirty cast iron to even wood without any problems with the scales. The covers cover them for the for most part so I think they would be okay with flood coolant.

What kind of things are you working on, and why are you needing/wanting the flood coolant? It may not be necessary for your application, and can just make a mess, plus wasteful. Most of the work I do I can spray or brush it.

I make glow in the dark lantern keychains. Like tritium keychains. I'm drilling 316 stainless and titanium. I think flood coolant would be very helpful
