These same SAR images can be used to track subs underwater. Even very deep, they leave a pattern on the surface that can be detected.

I forget the name of the satellite that was put up some years ago but it was to measure the height of the ocean very accurately using a laser range finder accurate to a few centimeters. It did a first survey at coarse resolution which revealed the gravitational anomalies caused by the Mid Atlantic Ridge as well as some sea mounts previously unknown. It was starting on the high res scan when it mysteriously failed. The supposition was that it would indeed reveal the position of submarines since no matter how deep the submarine is, if moving it will leave a bow wave trace that can be detected on the surface. The guess is that the military had it turned off.
