I found this toolpost in the stuff that came with my South Bend Heavy 10

It replaces the compound and mounts exactly the same way, it's obviously an original option. What puzzles me is the curved bottom of the tool pockets. Was this for rocker style tool holders?

Was this for rocker style tool holders?Yes.

Look amongst your South Bend bits for one or more abbreviated rockers - there should be four of these rockers. They will appear asymmetrical, one end shortened. The long end goes to the left on any given side - extending out to the face of the next side.

Is there a p/n stamped somewhere? Maybe STC100...?

Please destroy this tool and remove the picture,it gives me nightmares. It remindes me of my first five years in this trade before Alroris toolholders became common. Just kidding .Edwin Dirnbeck

It is rare as most got thrown away. Makes a decent door stop.

Yes, the lathe is surprisingly complete

I didn't know Southbend made those.

I'd modify it to hold an Aloris style.

Getting rid of the compound is one of the quickest ways to increase the rigidity of your lathe. Stefan Gotteswinter and Robin Renzetti both agree with me :). Wait, I don't think I have that order right.

I don't see it on the lathes.co.uk site (http://www.lathes.co.uk/southbend/page9.html) . Perhaps you could send your photo to Tony, especially if you can find the boats.

I got one with a 10K I am restoring. I think its very useful. It replaces the compound with much more rigid and massive tool holder. It uses normal 3/8 HSS or carbide tooling. The rockers let you adjust the approach angle. I just bought another for future use.
