In the thinking stages of building a belt grinder/sander mainly to smooth up the edges of saw cut aluminum and mild steel. Would like to use what I have on hand as much as possible big item being a 1 HP 1750 RPM motor I have on hand. If I put a 4 inch drive wheel directly on the motor according to a calculator I found the belt speed should be 1828 feet per minute or 21 MPH.
My question is what speed would be a good average for general grinding and would 1828 feet per minute be in the ball park?
Google answered my question and it looks like I will need to add a V belt drive to about double the speed. General feelings seem to be the belt needs to run around 3500 SFM.
Should have done a little more searching before posting...
