Seems to be two theory's actually for the source of the torque. There appears to be a thermal model and an electromagnetic model that suggest it could be either.

Read "Michael Faraday".
That is a variation of the drywall screw and the AA cell motor.
I picked up one of these to amuse and fool the grand kids.

I just made one. Very easy to make (~5 minutes) and surprisingly strong for only a few dozen windings.

I'd say it's magnetic, thermal makes no sense.
Also, at 40A I expect the bearings to be trashed in a matter of minutes.
