How small can a GPS unit be? Thinner is better. Thanks. JR

There are single chip GPS implementations. The size is then dependent on the battery and whatever radio is transmitting it's location.
I have a Samsung Galaxy Gear S that has cellular radio and GPS built in. It supports applications that can do things like turn on the GPS periodically and send the location via text or TCPIP.
The watch is 40mm wide, 60mm tall and 10mm thick. Will run 38 hours with cell phone and GPS turned on.
DanAt the end of the project, there is a profound difference between spare parts and left over parts.

All the GPS military birds in the air became open source.
I would not be surprised to see multiple GPS receivers in a phone.
Look at at the accelerometers we have in the phones now! JR

The Gear S is a watch. The dimensions I gave include the battery.
It would be quite believable for a story where the character was not building his own or buying or professional tracker.

I can see a storyline where the protagonist pops the watch itself out of the band and drops the matchbook sized watch in someone's pocket, truck bed, behind a car seat, etc.

The watch will act as a phone all by itself and the cell phone automatically transfers unanswered incoming calls to the watch if it's out of bluetooth range. If it's within BT range the phone can act as a speakerphone. Quite a package for something that fits on your wrist.

Mine is much more simple.
I just need a marker that will ping to any location. GPS seemed the best. Needs to be 2-3mm thick. JR
