So you have to run a VFD controller anyways right? and im thinking if this thing has enough power to propel a go-kart with person it would do fine on a small mill would it not?

Perfect if you need to power your mill with 48VDC system on a rambulance. ;)

Speed controller is 99 usd and you still need also high power 48V power supply. Can be expensive and needs more hacking than just buying a ordinary VFD.

"Normal" VFD also cant run "alternator motor" even if the motor voltage would match, you would need synchronous-motor capable VFD(preferrably sensorless)

Just buy a VFD and 3 Phase Motor, then when one of them dies you won't have to spend a month in dumpsters hoping for the right bit of trash to repair yours. :D

That was a really neat hack. Don't know about the machine aspect, but it's a heck of a nice go-kart.
