Hi everyone,

Thought I would post some machining content on here :).

I made a slitting saw arbor for saws with a 1" arbor. I've been wanting to for a few months and finally decided to just get it done. I think the motivation to finally make one was that I need it for another project. The never ending battle!

Nice video, and good project. At Cabin Fever a few years ago I bought some slitting saws for a couple dollars each, IIRC:

I also bought what appeared to be an arbor for them:

Way too much stick-out in an end mill holder:

I used it in my lathe almost like a horizontal mill:

It would probably be better to re-machine it into something more like what you made. I never had the occasion to actually use the saws or the arbor, and the lathe setup was clearly not very useful.

I've made arbors for 3 to 4 abrasive cutters, but have a store bought stepped arbor for the saws. For the former, I used a shoulder screw in the hole size, drilled a same dia receiving hole in the end of a piece of 1/2" or 3/4" bar with the tapped thread at the bottom.

Thanks for the "bump". I was getting ready to order an arbor when I saw the title of the post. The arbor is finished and I will use it in the morning.

Great video!

I've been thinking for some time of doing a new slitting saw arbor. But I like a bit more extension to aid with reaching down past parts and setup stuff. So I was thinking up to now about a full on R8 arbor style one piece project. But I started to realize that a one piece R8 and about 4" of extension would be a LONG piece to slide up into position. It would require lowering the table a lot to let me swing the R8 portion up into position. So now I'm thinking something more like your arbor in length and with a parallel stub to fit my 3/4" collet and about 4" of length to reach down past any tooling setup I've got Like a part that needs center line slitting and is mounted to my 6" rotary table in the vertical position.

But I'm thinking of using a Tormach TTS like design where a fairly stout flange with a lip that makes contact with the outer nose of the mill's spindle and is pulled up snuggly by the collet drawing up the stub. In my case this would effectively increase the size of the arbor's base to 1 3/4" diameter.

I do like your use of a locacting stub and retention screw for most of the uses for the low stick out past the slitting saws. Some years back I made an MT3 arbor that used much the same design. It worked very well and I liked that there was fairly minimal metal below the slitting saw so it could get in closer to some things.

Nice, but that is an extreme coarse teeth saw.
Looks like its ready to chew some wood, but steel?

It's bad enough if a wood saw clogs the gullets with sawdust. It would be VERY bad if a metal saw were to clog the tooth gullets with curls. So for a production situation where the cuts may be quite deep and driven hard I'd guess that this design is about right.

I've got some small saws with lots of teeth that are very thin intended for screw slotting. But most of my 1" center hole saws (about 6 of them) I've got have about the same tooth count. I assumed that the need to avoid clogging the gullets was the reason why.

I'm probably going to add wrench flats.

I'm also going to draw up a few smaller ones for some solid carbide saws. Anyone use the full solid carbide saws you can find on eBay?

BCRider - I like your idea of the quasi TTS style seating to keep the whole thing shorter. I might do that. At first I wanted a set of saws that I could use in the lathe and mill. I envision doing a fair bit of slotting in the lathe for some reason and wanted something that could be easily held in a 5C collet. Not that the TTS style wouldn't work - there still would be a shank.

Once I get the full set done up I'll post the rest of the drawings as well.
