I decided enough was enough with using mag bases and finally made a lathe carriage stop with a dial indicator for the Standard Modern:

It was a fun project. From the get go I wanted a design that you could use without always having to find an allen key, or bend down and look under the lathe to move.

I roughed it out on the bandsaw:

Finished the way profile on the shaper:

Used my newly made slitting saw arbor:

I used loctite to hold the only for looks brass ends on the handles and hard stop:

I made a video of the build if you are interested:

I'm just "prettying" up a set of drawings. I'll post them once they are done.

It looks very nice and I'm sure it works like a charm.

Cool;) Next stop, you need to make a ball turner :)

Or for smaller sizes like this even form cutters to cut the ball ends in a couple of segments. In particular when they are to be done in brass.

That's what I should do but I never seem to get to it. Could use an "obsolete" shaper like you too.

I used loctite to hold the only for looks brass ends on the handles and hard stop:

They look functional to me. It keeps the handles from dropping into the chip pan.

Also, it's more of an "carriage indicator/stop" thing.

Very sharp. Ill stash that design away for myself. Thanks. JR

Yes I did the drawing. Autodesk Fusion. The drawing component of Fusion is generally not very good compared to mid range packages like Solidworks but for the price is it exceptional. Drawings in Fusion is significantly better than it was in the early releases.

Yes the stops are functional - but the brass really wasn't required other than for looks. I find brass expensive these days (maybe it has always been?) but it seems we are using a lot less brass than in the old days and it has become more of a niche material. I really like the look of brass and steel together.

As promised here are the drawings. I'll put them here in jpeg format for viewing but if you want to print them out do so via pdf as the scaling will be wonky in the jpegs.

Looks good.

Very much like one I made a few years ago. I suppose there are not that many ways to make one....... not surprising that they all look so similar..;)

I made a mic to go with it, although it will fit either a real mic or a standard indicator (fits in the cutout). The mic part I made is an "everyday" one, used for general work, and accurate to about a thou or so.

Those "only for looks" brass knobs only look awesome.
