What I should have done long ago! (pics)

I have been meaning to build a hoist over the small lathe at work for three years, finally did it yesterday.-

    Column is 2-1/2" sch 80 pipe,swing arm is 3" sch 80 pipe with a 4"standard I-beam 48" long and a 1" sch 80 pipe diagonal brace.

Its tied off to the wall with two lengths of 2 x 3/8" flat bar anchored in with four 5/8" expansion anchors. And has a 2-1/2" 150lb pipe flange base plate anchored with the same 5/8" anchors at two places.

Works slicker than snot,I can hang chucks at will and lift parts off the floor. Now I have to build one for the big lathe.

I just need one more tool, just one!

If that overarm was a little longer, I could use that to get myself from the bed to the bathroom in the morning
What I don't see in the pics is a stop to prevent the dolly from rolling off the arm. Maybe I just don't see it.
      Nice work.

But what fun would that be?
Put on your glasses, first picture, end of the beam has a (very neatly cut and welded I might add )2-1/2" X 4" flat bar on the end.

Oh,and they say the first things to go are the eyes

Uh, Wierdscience, if this is for the "small lathe", 'zackly how big is the "big one"? BTW--you did a good job on it!!

nice job , after back surgery I am all for machines with cranes and hoist.

hauling steel in and out of the metal racks to the saw or iron worker is what kills me,rolling tables are a back saver.

I could only dream of having one as small as that Very tidy work there Weird. Now you can figure out a system to keep that chain clear of the lathe; maybe a timber apron?
                  cheers, Ken

I'd like to see you Wierd machine something really small on your *big* lathe.
The hoist looks quite necessary for your small lathe, good job

Very nice work on the hoist. If you come down and build me one I would provide lunch and the material. I need to do that also.

'first thing to go are the eyes'- where do they go? You're right, mine are going, and now I do see the stop, all nicely welded in place. Ok, but where's the remote control?

Remote control? Here they are called helper monkies

Speedy, chain clears now,I shortened the handchain to about a 5'loop,lift chain isn't a problem, besides it swings 360*That way I can pick a cup of coffee off the shelf behind the lathe, swing it around and crank it ti a convienent drinking hieght

Joe,last guy who made me an offer like that wanted me to change the gimbal bearings in his Mercruiser outdrive
Mike, damn right, back when I was stronger than smart I did many stupid things, now I'm paying for it,like flipping sheets of steel right next to a forklift, brilliant huh..

                          Bill,small things,I single-pointed a 3/8-24 for a pump shaft tach drive in the big lathe,does that count?

You didn't have to build it, you could have bought the one I have sitting out back instead...
