I have a Grizzly mini mill that the control box has finally given up and died. Rather than replace it with an original peace of crap, could any one stear me twards a low tech, switching system. I say low tech because reading and understanding electric
layouts leaves me out in the cold.

Maybe a dumb question but did you check the fuse? It is really rare for the whole thing to go south.

sounds like time to get into learning what a stepper motor is, and how they work. Takes some time for us non electrically or electronically minded people, but there is information out there, and even setups that are almost fool proof. The final picture might be just what you wanted in the first place, a CNC mill.

Chances are you blew the mosfets if the fuses are ok. Check those and replace if need be.

What part of the electrical system has died? Is it the motor control, get a 90-110vdc motor control. Do an ebay search for dc motor control or dc motor drive. JRouche

You can get almost any part you need to repair your mill at:

www.littlemachineshop.com (http://www.littlemachineshop.com)

I have bought from them in the past and had good service.

Ditto on lil' machine Shop.
They had all the nylon gears for my mill. (Don't wanna talk about why I needed them)
YOW! $120 for the controler, maybe it isn't injured, the current limiting protects it.
Chk fuse, switch 1st.
I have seen PWM controller kits for arund $ 20 - 25.
