    I made two replacement gear-change handles for a buddy's antique brake lathe today. The original cast iron handles were smashed during shipping.

    instead of pivoting the part 45 in 'Y' axis, could you instead pivot the part 45 in 'Z'? Hang it out the front, with a 45 angle block underneath...

    If it's tapering without the tailstock, then it's probably bed wear. My old 1980's Jet lathe has significant bed wear, and it turns a .001" to .002"...
