I would like to install a home made taper attachment on my Clausing MK3 lathe am not sure about mounting a support bracket to the backside of the carriage. I do not know what the bracket looks like and if it is supported by the two horizontal hex head cap screws (5/16 X 2-1/2 NC) that I believe hold the guide block under the back lathe way. There are two verticle round head slotted cap screws (5/16 X 1/2 NC) that I think may be adjusting screws for the guide block. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
The home made taper attachment has rectangular guides as opposed to dovetails and I am wondering if anyone has experience with this configuration. I might explain the taper attachment was purchased from a neighbor that owns a South Bend lathe. Again any help will be greatly appreciated. rock_breaker |

Well, I have never put a taper attachment on a lathe, but I can comment on the rectangular slideway.
The old Pacemaker lathe I have has a rectangular slideway, or maybe it should be called a 'guideway', on the taper attachment. Yeah, it works. Works great. The shoe that rides on this, however, has three McGill cam roller bearings in it. One on one side and two on the other side of a square piece about an inch and a quarter dimensions. This is a factory made taper attachment. There is a very detailed drawing of it available online at the Google patent search. Search for American Tool Works, lathe, taper attachment, or some such keywords, and you can find it. I did know the number but don't right off. How do you have yours made? |

Axlemoron: Thanks for the response, the shoes were not with the the unit so they are on my project list. I will look up your referenced information for use on my taper attachment.

Again thanks for the information. I found a supplier of McGill bearings in Farmington, New Mexico which is about 100 miles. I will lookup the patent next. I found information for an Atlas Clausing Model No. 7515 Taper Attachment that shows 2 capscrews, 3/8" x 16 tpi 7/8" long. my lathe only has two 5/16" X 18" cap screws that are 2-1/2 long. These are spaced appronimately 8-3/8" appart. I may be missing some holes. |
