Test Dial Indicator

I picked up a Brown and Sharpe Test Dial Indicator and it didn't come with instructions on how to use it.

I am hoping someone can give me some help.

Assuming it's all there, there's a 'tail' that moves when the body is held stationary. When the 'tail' moves, the needle rotates around the dial.
As to what you you use it for, there's all sorts of alignment, concentricity and height tests where it is very handy.
