Post HELP!! The metal must be shaped!!

I am pulling my hair out. I got my new lathe all ready to go and can't find a motor for it, well I can for 750 bucks. Does anyone know where to get used motors or cheap motors. I need either a 5hp 220 single phase 3600rpm or a 3hp 220 3phase 3600rpm. HELP.

    Calm down Flash!

Put on some Allman Brothers and turn the lights down. You may want to lie on the floor with an ice cube on your head. (It helps me sometimes)

We need to know what frame the motor is.

    Have you tried Surplus Center?
    http://www.surpluscenter.com

Harbor Freight now has 3hp motors that were previously sold as 5hp. Less than $100.

As Hoffman pointed out, no can help with so little information.

    What frame #?

Motors of that size bounce around ebay for chump change all the time.

    Something like this?

    Or this?

Grainger http://www.grainger.com lists a 3HP fully enclosed fan-cooled 230v 3ph made by GE for $283 under their catalog number 4RZ57. And many other motors.

Look in the yellow pages (the paper ones) under "electric motor." Call around your local motor shops and ask for leads to the motor you wish to find.

$750 is highway robbery for the motors you listed. Also why 3600 PM? Most machine tools are powered with 1800 (1750 actual full load RPM) RPM motors.

As it happens I have a 230 volt single phase 5 HP 1750 RPM 215 frame motor but Seattle to Ontario shipping a 100 + lb motor will kill the bargain.

You can buy a 3 HP VFD and motor as a packaged pair from Dealer's Electrics for $500 US or so. Look on the home page. Ontario is not that far from NYC. Maybe take a weekend trip with the family.

Any horizontal frame will do. I need the 3600rpm because that is what was on the lathe. It was actually a 2 speed 1740 and 3450rpm. I want to go with the high speed. I guess I could change the pully. The last one that jkilroy pointed out looks good. I asked if he could ship to canada.

Two speeds huh, well you may end up losing half of your speed changes if you go to a single speed motor.Least that's the way Hardinge does it.They use a two speed motor to give instand lo/hi capability which is nice if you do much drill and tap work in the lathe.
I just need one more tool, just one!

You should be able to get a Baldor motor for a fraction of that price. I have a Harrison Lathe, that came with a 3HP 2 speed, 50 hz, 415V 3 Phase motor. I had single phase 220V available. A phone call to a knowledgable friend, and I have a 3hp 220V 3ph motor and a Baldor Frequency inverter. Problem solved. Now I need a tachometer for the spindle.
