Post warning for anti spatter spray(welding)

hi all, i dont normally use anti spatter coz my mig is a neat welder, but today i was welding in the direct vacinity of a leadscrew and thought to spray some anti spatter spray onto the actual leadscrew, this could have been fatal to the paint job of a prized lathe or machine, with in seconds it stripped the paint to the bare metal, litteraly, the paint just crincled and whent soggy, there is no warning of this printed on the tin, the make is from eng-weld, i dont know if this goes for all anti spatter spray but i think this is an important thread and all should take care when using this stuff near a machine.

I've used Kleen-Weld anti splatter with no trouble at all. I wonder if the stuff you have is not a degreaser as well as a splatter shield.
Wow... where did the time go. I could of swore I was only out there for an hour.

I think a liberal coating of oil on the leadscrew would have protected it from splatter.

Where was the paint? I hope you didn't paint your leadscrew

    Bill,
was this the trike based anti-splatter or the water based.
If it was the trike based then use this for tapping fliud, it's tons better than that crap they call tapping fluid.

Anti-spatter stick = old motor oil. Brush it on a r o u n d the weld area (not i n the weld area) with an old paintbrush.

..and I'll keep that eng-weld in mind. Seems a lot better than that lame paint stripper junk they sell.

    Bill,
It might be old stock stuff.
At one time anti-splatter was trike based and when they outlawed it they went onto water based crap.
I managed to get a load of tins, could be eng-weld brand, and hung onto them as they are far better.

Found out the other week that even though trike has been banned here in the UK and now they are banning the substitute product as well, that cleaning Aero engines prior to crack testing has been exempt.

Guess who lives about 4 miles away from Rolls Royce's chief testing facility ?

75% trike and 24% ATF and 1% ear of bat, tongue of newt makes the best tapping fluid out there.
It's that good you can tap 1" whitworth without drilling a tapping hole

Is that straight in with the plug tap,or do you need to use a taper tap first ?
