Wink Had a nice surprise today

A year or so ago there seemed to be quite a lot of New Old Stock Bison lathe chucks on UK ebay, so some went very reasonably. A stockist must have gone bump I suppose. I had the chance of a 12" 3-jaw very cheap to fit to my TOS SN40C, so snapped it up. It was listed as plain back, so I'd need a backplate. I never even bothered to open the crate it was in, it's just sat there until I needed it. The standard chuck for the lathe is a 10", but it should handle a 12" without trouble. This weekend I did have a job for the bigger chuck, so decided to bite the bullet & sort out a backplate for it. The lathe has a C1-6 DIN spindle, which is exactly the same as D1-6 Camlock except that it uses 4 threaded studs instead of the 6 Camlock pins. It wasn't going to be a simple job, unless I wanted to spend more than the chuck had cost me on a new backplate. Cut the steel banding off the crate, opened it up and found.....a 12" chuck with integral D1-6 backplate!! All that was needed was to split the chuck, set the backplate on my rotary table & drill and tap two extra stud holes, and then turn up a set of 4 new studs. Hey presto, one 12" chuck with integral C1-6 backplate

I may have suffered the retribution already, pulling the backlate round on the rotary table discovered too late a nasty burr under the edge. Never expected to find that on Cast iron, it took a neat deep slice into my finger. Should really have taken it to be stitched or glued up, but Saturday afternoon, doctor's surgery shut, didn't fancy a long queue in casualty just for a couple of stitches.

    Brazing flux and masking tape.
Works wonders, the flux stops the bleeding and scabs the cut over and the tape holds all the stringy bits in.
Ironically it says on the tin if you get into a wound seek medical attention but it's just Borax powder.
So you go to the doc's and tell them you got flux in the wound, they wash it out , pack it with borax and stitch it up?
    Go figure.

I'm 58 next and have had my fair share of accidents around sharp tools. One skinned knuckle and two slices at present. Aso got a few longish scars on parts that don't matter but I have never needed any stitches.

    Brazing flux and masking tape.

Boy it's nice to see John Stevenson slip up once in awhile! Or, if you're gonna let that post rest on this particular thread then I'll have to agree with you, Peach pie is much better than Apple! (getten late over there John?)

Thank you to our families of soldiers, many of whom have given so much more then the rest of us for the Freedom we enjoy.

It is true, there is nothing free about freedom, don't be so quick to give it away.

My wife goes on about putting pepper on the wound to stop the bleeding. I don't think she's ever been brave anough to try it herself, though

I'll remember the brazing flux bit, though. I generally heal pretty quickly, I strapped it up myself with a Melonin pad & some sticky tape, there was still plenty of blood leaking out but the skin seems to have held together OK by this morning.
