Question Jacobs JT3 to JT 33 taper adapter?

    Hi,
This regards a Rockwell Model 15 drill press that has a male JT33 taper on the spindle. The original Jacobs SM8K33 chuck is shot. I've got a Jacobs 14N Superchuck with the larger JT3 female taper that I would like to install in its place. Is there anywhere that I can purchase a reducing adapter? Thanks, Steve

    Yikes.
I'm not familiar with said model 15.
BUT if if it was mine and did not have a female morse taper spindle, I would put a high priority on boring and reaming one.

Chuck arbors are cheap and allow you to mount almost anything practical into the DP.

If you go the the jacobs web site, they post the dimensions of the chuck tapers.
You easily can make such an adapter with your lathe compound, and some careful indicator work to arrive at the correct taper. It does not have to be hard, just fit correctly.

In any case plan ahead to get either option dismounted when you need to.

The thing to do is bring the spindle down and see if there's a slot in it. If there is, I bet there's an MT-2 taper in the spindle.

MT-2 to JT3 arbors are common. Don't know about cheap.

    Thumbs up

    Thanks guys,

Your input sparked an idea. I disassembled my old chuck with the female taper that fits my drill press spindle and plan to turn it down to match the female taper in the large chuck and use that as an adapter.

Unless you can drill through the back of your chuck for a bolt to hold it on you're wasting your time. Its hard enough to get a precision ground factory taper to stay on, much less one that's done on a lathe.

Not to hi jack this thread but has any body seen a# 2 S jacobs taper {2 short}arbor} arbor . they are listed in many jacobs arbor charts but nobody seem to sell them.
In other words a #2 S to a #2 Morse or a straight shank or what ever. Chris
