Hi Gang:
I am in the process of building a homemade arbor press for my internal keyway broach set, and was wondering where I can locate the rack threads for it? Or maybe any other ideas for building a small press for my broaches?
Thanks!

Try checking with your local bearing house. All the larger ones ( Kaman Bearing, Bearings Inc., etc) carry a line of gearing components.
If that's no good do a search for Browning Gears I know they offer gear rack.
I cut it twice, and it's still too short!

I tried to do what your attempting, buy a rack and building a press. It didn't work, not because of anything I did,it just turned out that I could buy a good used arbor press off Ebay including shipping for less than I could build one.
If your determined to build one, then assuming you have a mill the best bet is to mill your own rack.
I just need one more tool, just one!
What weirdscience said...Plus,
Those things are made out of heavy cast iron for a reason. The frame is cast and designed to not flex under tons of pressure. Unless you can cast your own, or have a friend with a foundry, you're chasing your tail on this one.
Arbo & Thor (The Junkyard Dog)
www.mscdirect.com lists spur gears and racks in a variety of pitches and 4 or 6' lengths for the racks. Haven't looked, but would be surprised if MCMaster didn't have it as well.
